Every flooring distributor has experienced this.
The rainy season arrives. Humidity rises. Then come the phone calls.
"My floor is swelling."
"The edges are lifting."
"There are bubbles near the joints."
"The planks seem to be bending."
For homeowners, flooring failure is often the most visible way to judge a flooring product. They may not know the flooring's density, thickness swell rate, or dimensional stability values, but they can immediately see when a floor starts deforming.
And when that happens, the first person they usually contact is not the manufacturer—it's the distributor or retailer who sold the flooring.
Of course, after-sales service matters.
Helping customers identify the cause, replacing damaged planks, or improving installation details are all important.
But experienced distributors know that preventing flooring failure is usually much easier than handling complaints afterward.
The real question becomes:
Can you recommend a flooring product that is better suited for humid environments in the first place?
In our previous article, we discussed several important indicators such as density, thickness swell, dimensional stability, and bending performance. These parameters help estimate how a flooring product may behave when exposed to moisture and temperature changes.
Today, let's look at the practical options currently available on the market.
Many distributors already know that floating vinyl flooring products such as SPC flooring and WPC flooring offer excellent waterproof performance.
In fact, for pure waterproof capability, SPC and WPC remain among the safest choices available today.
However, not every customer wants a vinyl floor.
Some homeowners still prefer the appearance, feel, and traditional structure of wood-based flooring. Others may have used laminate flooring for years and simply want a more durable version rather than switching to a completely different category.
This explains why premium waterproof laminate collections, such as the RevWood series from Mohawk, have built strong reputations among flooring contractors and distributors.
The demand is clear:
Customers want wooden flooring that performs better during humid seasons.
The first option is modern waterproof laminate flooring.
Despite the name, this is still laminate flooring. It still uses a wood-based core and retains the familiar appearance and installation experience that many consumers prefer.
The difference lies in the core technology.
Compared with conventional brown HDF laminate flooring, waterproof laminate flooring uses a much more moisture-resistant core structure.
A useful comparison is thickness swell performance.
Standard laminate flooring: often 10%–15% thickness swell after water exposure
Waterproof laminate flooring: typically below 2%
This significant improvement helps reduce swelling, edge lifting, and joint stress caused by moisture exposure.
For many distributors, waterproof laminate flooring represents the most natural upgrade path for customers who want to stay within the laminate category.
MFB flooring is becoming increasingly visible in some markets, though many buyers are still unfamiliar with it.
Compared with traditional laminate flooring, MFB products offer substantially better resistance to water and moisture.
Thickness swell values commonly fall below 0.3%–0.5%, with some products reaching around 0.1%.
In practical terms, this means MFB flooring can tolerate moisture exposure far better than even high-end waterproof laminate flooring.
Another advantage is fire performance, with many products capable of achieving A2 fire-rating standards.
MFB products often incorporate a higher proportion of recycled materials, helping control manufacturing costs while still delivering strong waterproof performance.
Many buyers struggle to distinguish MgO flooring from MFB flooring.
The two categories share several similarities:
Excellent waterproof performance
Very low thickness swell rates
Strong dimensional stability
High fire-retardant performance
A2 fire-rating potential
However, MgO flooring is generally regarded as the more premium option.
Compared with MFB, MgO products typically rely more heavily on newly manufactured materials and offer improved durability and environmental performance.
As a result, MgO flooring is often positioned at a higher price level.
For distributors targeting projects where long-term stability and premium specifications are priorities, MgO flooring has become an increasingly attractive option.
If a customer's primary concern is waterproof performance, floating vinyl flooring remains the most straightforward solution.
SPC flooring and WPC flooring continue to offer some of the best moisture resistance available in today's flooring market.
However, when customers specifically want a wooden-core flooring product, distributors now have several alternatives beyond traditional laminate flooring.
A simple way to think about it is:
Waterproof laminate flooring: a major improvement over conventional laminate flooring
MFB flooring: significantly better waterproof performance than waterproof laminate
MgO flooring: generally the highest-performing option among the three
Ultimately, the best solution depends on the customer's budget, expectations, and local climate conditions.
But one thing is certain: when humid season arrives, choosing the right flooring before installation is usually much easier than explaining a flooring failure afterward.
